Member: Ballet of the Dolls |
Ballet of the Dolls was created in 1986 by esteemed choreographer Myron Johnson. Providing the Twin Cities with its first year-round dance-theater program, the company immediately filled a unique niche in the arts community, offering intimate and innovative professional dance-theater performances that appeal to both dance and theater audiences. The Doll's mission is to fearlessly create challenging and surprising dance work that brings a sense of discovery to audiences and artists alike. Ballet of the Dolls used a grant from the Tobacco-free Lavender Communities for a production of Romeo and Julio, a version of the Romeo and Juliet story with a twist, focusing on a health, discrimination, and other issues faced by the LGBT community. |

Prior studies show that regular tobacco use among persons living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) is associated with reduced quality of life, higher rates of AIDS defining illnesses, faster progression to AIDS, and increased risk of mortality. The specific aim of the study is to conduct qualitative research to understand the dynamics of tobacco use among PLWHA within a well-established framework of health behavior change (i.e., The Theory of Planned Behavior). Thirty PLWHA who use tobacco will be recruited to participate in a 30-60 minute telephone interview about their use and motivation for tobacco use. The results will be analyzed to improve the health and quality of life of PLWHA by reducing or preventing tobacco use. |
